When we listen to music, we tend to be listening for either the lyrics or the beat. I tend to be a little more of a lyrics person and even when I like the beat of a song, it’s difficult for me to enjoy the music if the lyrics don’t sit right with me.
As a lyrics person, I remember feeling frustrated in high school by what I perceived as the superficial nature of love songs. I felt like so many of them were just about sex or the rush of falling in love. I wanted music about a deeper love, the kind of love married couples have after years, the kind of love that endures.
Below I’ve collected lines from 15 of my favorite love songs. While I won't go so far as to say that each of these songs is about enduring love, I feel like the lyrics here encapsulate something I believe is necessary for an enduring relationship. And while the lyrics are beautiful, I think the songs themselves are also pretty amazing.
